Rosterfy, the leading global volunteer and workforce management platform, is proud to support Grand Départ GB it launches the JOY Maker volunteer programme for the historic Grands Départs of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Britain in 2027.
As England, Scotland and Wales prepare to host the largest free-to-attend sporting event in UK history, Grand Départ GB is seeking around 9,000 volunteers to help deliver the iconic cycling event across six stages and 900 kilometres of British roads.
Volunteer applications opened on 27 May, marking the beginning of one of the UK’s largest volunteer recruitment campaigns. Alongside the launch, Grand Départ GB has introduced opportunities for volunteers to register their interest in roles across the event, while the programme also includes a Readiness to Work initiative designed to support young people aged 18–25 with mentoring, CV development and interview skills.
Rosterfy has been selected as the end-to-end volunteer management platform for the programme, supporting the full volunteer journey from application and onboarding through to training, communications and event-day operations.
Delivering a volunteer experience at scale
To support a programme of this size and complexity, Grand Départ GB selected Rosterfy to manage the volunteer journey from application through to event delivery.
Trusted by major sporting events, charities and volunteer programmes around the world, Rosterfy brings proven experience in delivering large-scale volunteer operations. Its configurable platform provides a standardised approach to volunteer recruitment, communications, onboarding, training and event-day operations.
For Grand Départ GB, the ability to combine enterprise-scale volunteer management with a user-friendly volunteer app was a key factor in the decision. With thousands of volunteers expected to engage with the programme across England, Scotland and Wales, creating a seamless digital experience was essential.
The right platform for a national volunteer programme
“9,000 volunteers is a huge number, spread across a huge geographical area, and as a team of three organising them all, we needed a platform that would do as much for us as possible while ensuring the best possible experience for people giving their time to apply.
“We are hoping to recruit lots of volunteers under the age of 25, and this group has high expectations for user experience. Things need to be smooth, easy, clear and obvious – and Rosterfy delivers that.”
Having previously used Rosterfy on other major projects, Hatt was confident the platform could support the unique requirements of the JOY Maker programme.
Bringing joy to communities across Britain
The JOY Maker programme aims to create memorable experiences for spectators, visitors and communities while inspiring more people to get involved in volunteering. With cycling clubs, community groups and local initiatives powered by volunteers across the country, Grand Départ GB hopes the event will encourage even more people to experience the impact of giving their time.
A boost for volunteering
“This amazing event is for everyone, and as a JOY Maker, volunteers will be a key part in creating a joyful experience for all and helping create memories that will last a lifetime. We hope it creates a real boost for volunteering across Scotland, England and Wales. I'd love it if people volunteer with us for the first time and enjoy it so much they want to volunteer again in their communities afterwards – volunteering is so important."
Building a lasting legacy for volunteering
With recruitment now underway, Grand Départ GB and Rosterfy are working together to build a volunteer workforce that will help deliver a world-class event while creating a lasting legacy for volunteering across Britain.
A boost for volunteering
"Managing 9,000 volunteers across three nations is a significant undertaking. Grand Départ GB needed a platform capable of delivering a consistent volunteer experience at scale while reducing administrative burden for a small team.
“Through our work with major events and volunteer programmes around the world, we've seen how technology can help create more engaging experiences for volunteers while giving organisers the tools they need to operate efficiently. We're really proud to support the JOY Maker programme and help create a lasting legacy for volunteering across Britain."
