SecondBite | FareShare, a leading Australian food rescue organisation, has partnered with Rosterfy to transform the way it manages and engages volunteers. The partnership will enable SecondBite | FareShare to streamline onboarding, reduce administrative overhead, ensure compliance, and support sustainable program growth around Australia.
From food preparation and kitchen gardening to logistics and administrative support, volunteers play a crucial role across SecondBite | FareShare’s diverse operations, with more than 11,000 people volunteering with the organisation every year
In the last year, volunteers helped the FareShare chefs prepare more than 2.8 million meals in the FareShare kitchens in Melbourne and Brisbane, and supported the FareShare gardens team to grow and harvest more than 113,000kgs of produce. Volunteers also help in SecondBite’s warehouses, sorting food for charity partners and supporting administration.
With demand for services increasing, SecondBite | FareShare turned to Rosterfy to help solidify the future of its volunteer program and scale more effectively.
“Rosterfy is going to give us the technology to enhance our operations, improve volunteer engagement, and scale sustainably.” - Emily Blomfield, Community Volunteer Manager at SecondBite | FareShare
Automating Onboarding with Role-Specific Training
Manual onboarding had long been a bottleneck for SecondBite | FareShare, with processes taking anywhere from 4 to 10 weeks. Rosterfy will allow SecondBite | FareShare to automate and personalise the volunteer onboarding experience—delivering tailored, role specific training content that reflects the skills and responsibilities of each volunteer role.
“We’re fortunate to have strong interest in our volunteer program, but with a small admin team, we simply didn’t have the capacity to onboard efficiently. As a result we were seeing a noticeable drop off from application to conversion as we were taking too long to engage with our interested candidates.” said Blomfield.
With regard to training, SecondBite | FareShare was delivering their training through an external platform that offered limited opportunities for customisation. The team are excited to use Rosterfy’s in-built online training to completely transform this part of their volunteer management.
“Previously, our onboarding was one-size-fits-all. Now we can personalise training and make it engaging—online and onsite. Instead of every volunteer having to undergo comprehensive training to cover the requirements of our most complex roles, Rosterfy’s in-built online training will allow us to deliver personalised and engaging content in one central place that is relevant to the role and the experience required.” Bloomfield continued.
Purpose-Built for Volunteer Management
While SecondBite | FareShare considered managing volunteers through its existing CRM and scoped other volunteer management platforms, the team ultimately selected Rosterfy for its purpose-built features, scalability, and compliance functionality. With a two-way integration between Rosterfy and Salesforce, SecondBite | FareShare will now benefit from a single source of truth—eliminating duplicate data entry and manual system updates.
Seamless Communication at Scale
Rosterfy’s automated communications tools will also help SecondBite | FareShare connect with its volunteers more effectively. Until now, volunteer communications were managed through separate platforms, and were almost entirely manual. With Rosterfy, volunteers will receive automated updates about shift confirmations, expiring credentials, and important program changes, all from one central system.
Real-Time Compliance and Reporting
Operating in a commercial kitchen under strict HACCP standards, SecondBite | FareShare must ensure volunteers are properly trained, accredited, and accounted for. Rosterfy will give the team real-time visibility over compliance status and allow them to track volunteer presence onsite—crucial for both safety and efficiency.
“Right now, checking if someone is compliant means manually digging through spreadsheets. With Rosterfy, we’ll have real-time access to accreditations and training records, and we’ll be able to generate reports with a click,” said Bloomfield. "It will also help us better communicate the impact of our volunteers to our board and stakeholders.”
A Platform Trusted by Leading Food Rescue Organisations
Already trusted by food relief organisations globally—including OzHarvest, Houston Food Bank, Maryland Foodbank and Blessings of Hope—Rosterfy’s partnership with SecondBite | FareShare reinforces its position as the leading volunteer management solution for mission driven organisations.
With Rosterfy, SecondBite | FareShare is set to dramatically reduce admin workloads, boost volunteer engagement, and scale its impact in the communities it serves.
